How Sales Tax Works on TCGplayer

When is sales tax charged on a buyer’s transaction?

As a marketplace, TCGplayer calculates, collects and remits sales tax for orders shipped to customers in states where legally required due to our business circumstances or those of our sellers. Select sellers may request that TCGplayer withhold sales tax on their behalf due to their tax situation. Additionally, TCGplayer is subject to various state laws that require businesses to collect sales tax on non-exempt purchases. This is a changing landscape and our compliance efforts are ongoing as states continue to enact new laws.

How is sales tax calculated?

If an item is subject to sales tax in the state to which the order is shipped, tax is generally calculated on the total selling price of each individual order. In accordance with state tax laws, the total selling price of an item will generally include item-level shipping/handling charges.

The amount of tax charged on your order will depend upon many factors, including location of the seller and destination of the shipment. Factors can change between the time you place an order and the time of credit card charge or PayPal authorization, which could affect the calculation of sales taxes. The amount appearing on your order as Estimated Tax may differ from the sales taxes ultimately charged.

If you have any questions about your order, always feel free to submit a request. We’re here to help!

What is my responsibility for states TCGplayer doesn’t collect sales tax for?
